Shooting Stars (Self Advocates)

This group’s main goal is for them to help themselves to become leaders, to become accepted members of society with a voice that is not only heard, but continually growing stronger, and to stand up for their rights and the rights of those around them.

This is the program we will most likely start back up first after the COVID-19 bans are lifted. It meets twice a month and helps tremendously with mental health, self-esteem, and the well-being of adults with IDDs.

Many of our Shooting Stars volunteer throughout the year to support programs at AbilityPoint and to reach out to others in need. They sponsor the Thankful Feast Event and the Adopt a Family Christmas program, sharing gifts with individuals and families who might have nothing otherwise.

All participants need to set up an account in Camp InTouch and complete all necessary paperwork before they can attend. Anyone needing assistance can contact our program staff at 943-1191. If you’d like to apply to register for activities, click here.

If you already signed up for programs and need to access your Parent Portal, please click here.

They also have donated thousands to AbilityPoint in support of AbilityPoint projects and money raised through their Celebrity and Community Auction. Each spring, the Celebrity Auction provides over 2,000 celebrity and community items for public purchase. The Self Advocates hand-write hundreds of letters to a variety of international celebrities to solicit signed collectible items. This annual event offers a silent and live auction, as well as camaraderie and great food.
