Volunteer Spotlight –
Dan and Shirley Rogers
“Volunteering at AbilityPoint makes me feel better,” Dan Rogers said. “It’s good for the soul. It brings focus to what’s most important in life: respect, dignity, friendships, and caring for others.”
For the second time in as many years, he and wife Shirley Rogers are eagerly providing an $8,000 challenge match for AbilityPoint’s end-of-year giving campaign SHINE. For them, supporting and volunteering at AbilityPoint is more than just a way to give back to the community it’s an experience that enriches their own lives.
For more than a year, Dan has regularly volunteered at various Abilitypoint events including Lunch Bunch, YESS outings to Rock River Rapids, Wind Surge games and more. But for Dan, the highlight is always the Adult Day outings.
“I look forward to seeing the ‘regulars’ and participating in all the fun adventures,” he said. These outings provide a chance for adults with disabilities to enjoy new experiences, socialize, and be part of a community that celebrates their uniqueness.
Dan believes that supporting AbilityPoint is a way to make a meaningful impact in the lives of people with disabilities, who are often marginalized. “By supporting AbilityPoint, we are in some small way making their lives a little easier,” he explains.
Through his time with AbilityPoint, Dan has gained more than just cherished memories—he’s formed lasting friendships. “My friends at AbilityPoint have made me a better person by allowing me to share a small part of their lives,” he reflects. “They’ve taught me the importance of compassion, patience, and understanding.”
In addition to volunteering and financially supporting AbilityPoint, Dan has also used his woodworking talents to create handmade toys that were given to YESS students and a music box that will be used to benefit programs.
Dan Rogers’ story is a testament to the power of volunteering. By dedicating his time and heart to AbilityPoint, he’s helping to create a community where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. And, as he and Shirley continue to participate in and support these meaningful activities, they are reminded of the value of kindness and the joy of making a difference—one smile, one outing, one friendship at a time.
